Whenever we commit a sin we should immediately ask for forgiveness from God and request the strength to avoid the further pitfalls of sin. For anyone with a conscience, Christian or otherwise, committing a sin can be detrimental, not so much because we did something against God, as bad as that is in itself, it is because we have once again broken the heart of someone who cares deeply  about us. God does not want us to suffer the results of an eternal life in the lake of fire, if He did He would never have allowed His son Jesus to be sacrificed in order to give us a way out.
