Infecting the Adobe Acrobats

Adobe Acrobat users of both version eight and nine should be aware that the zero day bug has been confirmed in both of them. Effective attacks will compromise Windows, Macintosh and Unix systems. Criminal activity in the business of hacking seems to be on the rise, with no end in sight. A quote by security information service Secunia, states that “the vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the font parsing in CoolType.dll and can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow.” Users should be aware of email attachments which employ pdf files. Users are “recommended to turn off JavaScript in Adobe Reader and consider it a best practice for normal desktop usage”.

Job tells us, “Don’t you even know the basics, how things have been since the earliest days, when Adam and Eve were first placed on earth? The good times of the wicked are short-lived; godless joy is only momentary. The evil  might become world famous, strutting at the head of the celebrity parade, But still end up in a pile of dung. Acquaintances look at them with disgust and say, ‘What’s that?’ They fly off like a dream that can’t be remembered, like a shadowy illusion that vanishes in the light. Though once notorious public figures, now they’re nobodies, unnoticed, whether they come or go. Their children will go begging on skid row, and they’ll have to give back their ill-gotten gain. Right in the prime of life, and youthful and vigorous, they’ll die.”

Not surprisingly, there are still some people that can find nothing positive to do with their time. Infecting computers in this day and age, serves absolutely no purpose other than to wreak havoc on members of society. It is not even for profit that these criminals seek, in fact it seems as though the only thing that interests them is to observe the electronic world come to its knees. Sadly, the individuals who seek to accomplish their ill gain will never be recognized for what they think they have accomplished, because their success will never be recognized by the rest of the world as something positive.

US Marines take action

Pirates off the coast of Somalia continue to terrorize the shipping industry for what seems like an eternity. One of the latest victims is the German owned M/V Magellan Star which was taken control of by nine pirates. As part of a twenty five nation group, US warships have entered the fray in an attempt to avert the continued pirate harassment. Nine suspected pirates were taken into custody during a pre dawn raid which was carried out by twenty four marines. It was unnecessary to exchange any fire with the pirates as they drew down and gave up while the ship was returned to the hands of the crew.

In the book of Job we read, “But if Judgment Day isn’t hidden from the Almighty, why are we kept in the dark? There are people out there getting by with murder— stealing  and lying and cheating. They rip off the poor and exploit the unfortunate, Push the helpless into the ditch, bully the weak so that they fear for their lives. The poor, like stray dogs and cats, scavenge for food in back alleys. They sort through the garbage of the rich, eke out survival on handouts. Homeless, they shiver through cold nights on the street; they’ve no place to lay their heads. Exposed to the weather, wet and frozen, they huddle in makeshift shelters. Nursing mothers have their babies snatched from them; the infants of the poor are kidnapped and sold. They go about patched and threadbare; even the hard workers go hungry. No matter how backbreaking their labor, they can never make ends meet. People are dying right and left, groaning in torment. The wretched cry out for help and God does nothing, acts like nothings wrong!”

This problem with the pirates has been going on for longer than it needed to, however, I am glad to see that so many nations can come together to deal with a problem that otherwise should not have been. History will show that if we continue to pay a ransom every time someone is kidnapped, they will only continue with their criminal spree. While I understand that lives are at stake, we must realize that condoning criminal behavior will only encourage it further. Great job by the US marines and the rest of the coalition.

Lake house fun

We have a lake house that we use quite a bit. It’s belonged to us for almost three decades and we’ve spent so much time there. But we’re actually some of the only local – or almost local – people that have houses there.

Last weekend we had a cookout and invited over a lot of our neighbors. Once everyone sat down and started talking we got on the subject of growing older. The Stewarts started talking about Miracle Ear Boca Raton FL and how they went there last year to get their hearing aids. And then Rob Johnston started talking about how he bought his hearing aids in Indiana near where he calls home. Then Alexis, who lives around the sound, said that she went to miricle ear in Abbyville KS for hers.

I thought it was crazy how much in common people from different places across the country can have in common. But I guess it just goes to show you that everyone is the same, after all.
