Like most children today, I too enjoyed visits to the local and visiting circus. There is something about an experience with the clowns and other showcase antics that will continue to wow a child today, regardless of the age of that child. Because of those interests, theme parks and Ringling Brothers will continue to be successful in their endeavors to fill their parks. One of the attractions that interested me the most was the trapeze artists, especially when they flew through the air at such high altitudes, if they missed and fell it would not be good for them if they missed the catch net.
In the book of Hosea we read, “They entertain the king with their evil circus, delight the princes with their acrobatic lies. They’re a bunch of overheated adulterers, like an oven that holds its heat From the kneading of the dough to the rising of the bread. On the royal holiday the princes get drunk on wine and the frenzy of the mocking mob. They’re like wood stoves, red-hot with lust. Through the night their passion is banked; in the morning it blazes up, flames hungrily licking. Murderous and volcanic, they incinerate their rulers. Their kings fall one by one, and no one pays any attention to me.”
One of the reasons why the circus could be a poor influence on many of us is this, it is built on deception. The majority of activities that transpire at a circus can only be accomplished through the art of deception, and that breeds lies. While I realize that some of my readers will find that I may be a bit hard on the circus, after all it is intended to be fun is it not? Well here is the thing, fun things are not necessarily good things and until we realize that, we should evaluate what these things actually accomplish before we open the doors to let them into our lives and the lives of our children.
