If you didn’t already know, I currently live in Seattle. There’s a bill that’s currently in the Washington State Legislature that, if passed, will levy a tax on all software customizations done by businesses (at least, for now, those businesses residing in the state of Washington).

You may not think this impacts you directly, but if other states (or governments in other countries) see it as a viable option, they may consider doing the same thing where you live.

I spoke with Ken Myer, President and CEO of the WTIA, to find out more about this bill – and why it’s probably not the smartest thing for small businesses here.

The AMD Fusion Media Explorer is a very different way to browse through your photos. FME allows you to explore your digital media content from either your local machine or online resources such as Flickr, YouTube, and Microsoft Live. The application also has Facebook integration, which lets you post and interacting with photos of your own… or with those posted by friends.

Fusion Media Explorer doesn’t stop with pictures. Use the integrated search engine or 3D Ribbon to find videos, movies and television shows that interest you.

Thanks go to everyone at AMD for helping me to attend the SXSW conference, and for taking the time to showcase so many of their new technologies for our community. http://chris.pirillo.com

Immigration is a hot topic these days with the determination as to what should be done to reduce the increased “illegal” influx of these seekers of a better life. Immigration is (and always has been) the backbone of increasing the countries population, but that would be “legal” immigration, where the prospective settlers go through the motions (sometimes called Red Tape) to successfully obtain their naturalization papers. Because of all these motions, (or Red tape) those who are desperately looking for the ability to secure a better livelihood, have taken to crossing the nations borders illegally.

It is this group of individuals that have been at the center of controversy with the legislature, who are receiving no end of complaints from constituents trying to provide some semblance of safety and security in their own back Yard. This is a touchy subject, as with the majority of Americans, (not American Indians) their roots can be traced back to some other country, prompting the question, what makes them any better than the same immigrants that are presently seeking a better way of life.

Unfortunately for these newbies, nothing is different, therefore they should have the same rights as those that came before them, period! What makes this situation somewhat different, however, is the need for new blood. Sure you can (and probably do) place quotas on future influxes of immigrants, but that will only serve to prolong the needs of these people who appear to be desperate. The real problem is, what to do to keep the criminal element out, after all we have plenty of our own.

One of my favorite sayings these days, other than doing unto others, is this, “there is a time and a place for everything”, after all we should not attempt to have a party in your own home at four AM, unless of course you happen to be the only inhabitant and you do not live within a mile of your nearest neighbor, unless of course you are looking to have some of the angriest neighbors that you have ever seen and you are hoping to secure a visit from the local “protective and serve” guys.

I have stated in the past that the death penalty should not be used against our citizens, and I have just one reason why I draw that conclusion, our justice system lacks the ability to do the prosecuting effectively and fairly. History has shown that they will botch it every time, while running the risk of executing an innocent man, just so they can close a case. It is almost like the old days when a gunslinger takes someones life, he has a tendency to place a notch in his gun, the Attorney General’s office has the same behavior.

The recent determination, however to put to death Serial Killer Rodney Alcala is definitely a slam dunk case and from where I sit, I would venture to say that that determination was well deserved.

There is usually some sort of fear that is associated with the witnessing of a Gun Toting individual, whether that person is a criminal or an officer of the law. We always hope that the latter would be displaying those tools as a form of dissuasion against harm coming to us, the ones they are protecting, however in recent times that thought process has become more and more in jeopardy with the odds of these “protectors” using their tools of hate against the very people they were intended to protect.

During the period of time when the possibility of a terrorist act was increasingly imminent, it was understandable that we would experience the visual effects that are usually associated with the show of force. It has been the custom of our protective services (in any event) to increase their numbers when attempting to apprehend a suspect, whether that person is guilty or not. Whether they do this because they themselves are afraid, or they would prefer to act as the bullies they are fast becoming is unclear, but action such as this will only create a reaction from prospective criminals.

Within recent times, the increased presence of firepower gracing the subways of New York city has stirred up a whole new cause for alarm, after all considering the fact that New York City is not a police state, (not yet anyway) one wonders what the cause of all this fire power is all about.
