In an island filled with such beauty and sunshine, it is hard to imagine that there could be any heinous acts to disrupt your expected perfect vacation. Unfortunately crime, like in most other countries is rampant in Jamaica too. Kidnapping has been around for sometime now, and while many prefer not to report it due to special instructions from the kidnappers, that certainly does to change the fact that you need to be on the lookout.

The Jamaican authorities are doing what they can to curb this rather disturbing trend, however, even though they are arresting aggressors as they find them, there are those who get away to kidnap again another day. The problem is that families are paying ransoms (the ones that can afford it) and this creates further complications, as the kidnappers, once successful in one attempt, will return again for more.

If you come from money, or you have access to funds (through family or friends) unless your security level is high, you can find yourself on someone’s radar. Politicians and high ranking officials are (front and center) targets for kidnappers that are looking for a big pay day. The kidnappers appear to be more elusive when it comes to getting caught and this will only increase the chances of another kidnapping (or kidnappings) in the future. Because the police have requested a “mum’s the word policy” from newspaper reporters, there may be more kidnappings taking place than we may be aware of.
